Targeting

There was so much clearance at Target this week, I really wanted to buy it all! I had to put back at least half the things back that I thoughtlessly picked up marked clearance. I’m really loving these new deals Target has too like buy this get this free or buy this get $1.00 off, etc. Makes for soooo many ways to save!

Overall, I saved 59%. Not my best, but really not bad. Especially considering all the clearance items I purchased without coupons at all.

Learning to Coupon at the Dollar Tree & Target Finds

I was beyond excited when I heard the news about the Dollar Tree- now accepting coupons! Now if only Big Lots can get in on it too! I did not go to a very big or well-stocked store for my time around. Which was not a good idea. It definitely left me feeling rather defeated. There was a very limited selection & I was only able to make it out with 3 items & paid $1.00.

I did manage to find these regular size boxes of fruit roll ups. Typically, the Dollar Tree carries the smaller packages of only 4 fruit roll ups. The big boxes run between $2.00-$3.00. So that was a great steal. Here’s the breakdown:

     2 Fruit Roll Ups @ $1.00 + 1 $1.00/2 MQ (printable) = $1.00 OOP

     1 Brut Deodorant @ $1.00 + 1 $1.00 MQ (SS 09/09/12) = $0 OOP

My total was $3.00 & I paid $1.00. I saved $2.00. I’m hoping to go to a bigger Dollar Tree with more luck this weekend. It is a very difficult place to coupon because every store has a completely different selection of name brand products. So I’m still learning too! Do be sure to look over there coupon policy, here. Basically, they adjust coupons down so that there is no overage & they only accept 2 printed coupons per transaction. There are no other limits in place yet.

The lady in front of me in line had apparently never been to a Dollar Tree & asked as every item rang up how much it was. The cashier assured her over & over everything was really only $1.00. She was loosing her patience with the woman but I couldn’t help laughing! I love the Dollar Tree & am still excited to see what kind of deals I can find with coupons there. Has anyone else tried couponing there yet? Good experiences or bad?

As far as Target goes, I did pretty well. There was a handful of things on my list I was not able to find. That just means I’ll have to go back! I saved 76.5%, to be exact. I spent $11.52 & saved $37.54.

     Here’s that breakdown:

Not too terrible of a day for couponing! How did you do this week? Any great finds?

 Good luck!

Couponing Realities: the Good, the Bad, & the Ugly

It has been a long day-good, bad, & ugly! But I am determined to get this post out!

      I saved a total of about 60% today, at Walmart & Target. I spent $95.08 & saved $125. 57.

I started the day off right with a free Sonic Route 44 (coupon from doing the survey at the bottom of receipt-love those!) & an $.89 coney. Which was a promo they were running all day, apparently. Worked well! If you’d like to be informed about deals at Sonic, text the number they provide at your local Sonic Drive-in. If you look around, there’s usually a few signs prompting you to text a particular number & receive occasional announcements. Sometimes, it will be a coupon/offer in the form of a text message, other times, they are just an announcement of any specials deals & promotions going on at your local Sonic.

Then I headed to Walmart, where I met a wonderful giveaway. Giveaway at Walmart? Sounds unbelievable right?  I thought the same thing…As I was entering the store & picking my cart, I heard an announcement that Walmart was giving a free gift to all adult shoppers. I thought I was hearing things for a moment. Then I heard it again & noticed the gathering of carts across the store. I followed them. This is the good part.

It was nothing to get too worked up about, but it was fun. How often does Walmart happen to give away free vegetable/cheese peelers? Or anything for that matter. Never.

Anyway, in the end I got my $5.00 ‘stainless steel state of the art peeler.’ A man was doing a live info-mercial basically & we got the peeler free, for watching. I understand many people wouldn’t waste their time just for a peeler. But, personally, I have a thing for info-mercials. Me & sister both got the bug for ’em. So I might have watched him either way, free peeler or not. From what he said, he will be traveling around Walmarts in Texas doing this. So be on the lookout!

After his five minute spill I continued on my couponing-journey refreshed with the already free $5.00 peeler I had in my cart. I couldn’t help but smile.

I spent $10.49 at Walmart & saved $39.26. My total before coupons was $49.75 I saved almost 80%.  Here’s the breakdown:

     1 EuroKitchen Vegetable/Cheese Peeler @ $5.00 + FREE (see above) = $0 OOP

     4 Glade Expressions Starter Kits @ $2.98 + 4 $3.00 MQ (Prinable)  = $.08 Profit

     4 Cutter Citronella Candles @ $.97 + 4 $1.00 MQ (No Longer Available) = $.12 Profit

     1 Bic Silky Disposable Razors @ $2.94 + 1 $3.00 MQ (SS 8/5/12)= $.06 Profit

1 Natural Instincts Hair Color @ $6.99 pricematch to CVS @ $2.99 (cashier gave me the final printed price in the ad) + 1 $3.00 MQ (SS 8/12/12) = $.01 Profit

     3 Trident Gum Multipcaks @ $2.38 + 1 $1.00/3 MQ (8/12/12)  = $6.14 OOP

     4 Clean & Clear Morning Burst Travel Size @ $.97 + 4 $1.00 MQ (No Longer Available) = $.12 Profit

     2 Neutrogena Facial Cleansisng Wipes Travel Size @ $1.97 + 2 $2.00 MQ (Printable)  =$.06 Profit

     1 pkg. 18 Washrags @ $4.00 = $4.00 OOP

I had a very hard time checking out at Walmart, as the cashier was brand new. This is where the good & bad meet. I kept my ‘coupon-etiquette’ as she read all the details on every single coupon before scanning. I felt awful every time she ran to the manager to ask a question because there was a pregnant lady behind me with just a bottle of Snapple waiting waiting waiting. I would’ve let her go in front of me, but she wasn’t there when I began checking out. The only deal she did not allow me to get was for Duck Brand packaging tape. I picked up a masking kind of tape that clearly read packaging tape on the label. The young woman did not seem to understand that the product being purchased did not have to be in the picture on the coupon, but the wording. She did accept everything else though. Maybe I will try for the tape again later.

The deal on the hair color was my favorite. I would’ve grabbed more, but there was only 1 box left of the shade I use. Last time I risked using a different shade, I had red roots…not making that mistake again! I’m hoping they’ll restock & I can grab some more for free or even $3 with this deal. It is the perfect time to stock up! Also, I tried to get this same deal at Target; they do not price-match to drugstores or Randall’s. So keep that in mind. You also have to go to the service center to get anything price-matched; you may not do it at the register. I love shopping at Target & was very sad to find this out today. Will be saving any price-matching for Walmart trips only in the future.

Now on to the grand finale at Target!

Here I spent $84.59 & saved $90.31. My total before coupons was $174.90, which makes for a savings of almost 60 %. Here’s the breakdown. I’ll warn you, it’s lengthier than the Walmart one!

Unfortunately, this is where the ugly starts. I was standing in line with what I thought would be a great cashier. The manager on duty thought the line was too long & that she should ring me up. Well, the woman was not paying much attention. Not much at all. Sadly, $20.00 worth of my coupons were not rung up. They were just stuffed into the drawer with the rest of them without ever being scanned. I was a little shocked with how much my total came out to be. I figured I had miscalculated & bought too much or something so I didn’t say anything. I did notice she had not scanned several of my coupons, but the scattering of them seemed so disorganized I wasn’t positive I was right. I assumed since she was the manager, she had correctly rang me up & I was just mistaken so I kept my mouth shut. I know, I know, I should’ve said something immediately when I notcied. I could even go back to the store now, I suppose. I’m almost positive if I would’ve accused her of not scanning them all, I would have been at fault. She was not very happy or lenient about my couponing in the first place. So I had no choice. I had to stay sweet. Once I got home, I scoured my receipt & did all the math. In the end, I should’ve dished out around $65.00. But that is the reality of couponing, sometimes you get, sometimes you don’t & sometimes you learn it’s just not worth it to open your mouth.

So, have you experienced the good, the bad, & the ugly yet? What’s your reality of couponing?

Best Couponing Gush Ever!

So I had myself a bit of a free day yesterday. It started with picking up a free 8×10 print at Walgreens, then led me to Walmart, the mall, & Target. Now I did plan & plan & plan all evening the night before this day-long shopping trip. All in all, I spent around $80 & saved over $245. I think that’s something to blog about & pretty darn impressive if I do say so myself.

Here’s pretty much everything I got-

Image

The real fun part is setting this all up to take a picture. 😉

Oh & did I mention this included lunch?  Sure did!

I’ll begin the breakdown in chronological order of the day’s activities.

Walgreens was first to pick up a free 8×10. This week they are doing a fun promo, 7 Days of Deals. Each day a new deal is introduced & on Sunday that deal happened to be a free 8×10 photo print (no purchase required). If you opt to pick-up in store it’s free! Keep an eye out; they may have deals for more free photo items this week! That was already $3.99 that I paid $0 for. The cashier man was very confused about how I didn’t have to pay but let me go on regardless.

Image

Walmart was second up. Here I actually made money. I owed $57.38 at checkout. After coupons, I owed nothing but they owed me $.99! How awesome is that? Which means I have enough for a Sonic drink at happy hour! Woohoo! Although, they were out of a couple things I planned to get great deals on, like the citronella candles & accu-view nano. Here’s what I gathered at the mart-

6 Glade Expressions Starter Kit @ $2.98 + 6 $3.00 MQ = $.12 overage

2 Black Flag Fly Paper @ $.98 + 2 $1.00 MQ = $.04 overage

1 Swiffer 360 Duster @ $2.97 + 1 $2.00 MQ = $.97 oop

29 Kotex Pads @ $.94 + 29 $1.00 MQ = $1.74 overage

Now onto the Mall. Here I stopped for lunch in the foodcourt. I got a free Chickfila sandwich ($3.09). I used a coupon from the bottom of a previous receipt. Oftentimes, receipts will print with special deals on the bottom. Typically, you must perform a quick survey in exchange for a code. You write the code on the space on the receipt & then turn it in for whatever it states. In my “poor college student” opinion, I would rather take the 5 or so minutes to take the survey than to actually pay for my food. I did the same thing to get my drink, a free route 44 from Sonic ($2.53). Be sure you are ALWAYS checking your receipts folks! You could be missing plenty of free meals! I know several retail stores do the same thing too, like Victoria’s Secret & Bath & Body Works. Don’t toss them away carelessly without even looking, they can be pretty valuable! For my dessert, I headed over to Godiva to pick out my free chocolate for the month ($2.50). By signing up for the Gold Member Rewards Program, you can receive any free counter chocolate every month. Of course, certain restrictions apply according to location. All you do is walk & ask an associate for your free chocolate for the month. If you have your card with you, they will scan it. Otherwise, all they need is a phone number. You can sign up online, here, or in stores. There is absolutely no purchase necessary & other perks are included as well. I saved $7.94 total on my lunch.

Hurry go do it! What are you waiting for? It’s free & it’s chocolate! My two favorite things!

At the mall I also shopped at Bare Escentuals, Vera Bradley, & Victoria’s Secret, all without spending even 5$! Because I signed for the FAB club at Bare Escentuals, I got a birthday email for a free eyeshadow. The color is sold for  $14.00 & I got totally for free with this offer! Sign up here for this. I love their makeup & would still be wearing it everyday if my mother was not selling Mary Kay.

I also had a coupon for Vera Bradley for my birthday, a $20 off anything. I didn’t even have to spend the full $20 so it was basically like a gift card. Fun right! I got a market tote for $8.00 & a coin purse for $14.00. So I did end up paying $2.00 extra & tax- $2.17. Sign up for Club Vera to get this on your birthday too, plus other occasional coupons. Or you can give them your information at checkout & you will automatically be signed up! Obviously, I saved $20.00 at Vera Bradley. Happy Day.

Next is Victoria’s Secret. Here I got a free cotton panty  up to $10.50. I used a coupon from their mail out. How do you get these? Well, several ways. Sign up for their general email, here. Sign up for Pink Nation to receive exclusive PINK offers. & lastly, when you checkout at any Victoria’s Secret, always give them your phone number & email. The more you shop the more coupons, etc. you get. How do they know you’re shopping at their store? When you enter your phone number & email! Do it every time you go in there. Seriously. I saved $10.50 at Victoria’s Secret.
